Best of 2009 - deel 1

Top 10, top 100, top 9,...? Ach, in de sport tellen meestal maar drie medailles: goud, zilver en brons. Ik maak er me dus gemakkelijk vanaf en presenteer, exclusief voor u, lieve luisteraar, mijn favoriete drie van 2009. Overigens raak ik er ook meer en meer van overtuigd dat ik meer een "singles"-man ben, dan een "album"-man. Zo staan er op Veckatimest fantastsiche momenten (Ready, Able is het mooiste dat ik dit jaar mocht horen), maar in z'n geheel slaag ik er niet in de plaat uit te luisteren. Bij de volgende drie platen lukt dat echter probleemloos.

Brons: Phoenix, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
Phoenix had dit jaar de twijfelachtige eer de enige recensie te zijn die we dit jaar op onze site publiceerden. Los daarvan is het een voor mij perfecte popplaat.


Zilver: Fuck Buttons, Tarot Sport
De vorige worp, Street Horsssing (voor alle zekerheid het correcte aantal s-en nog eens opgezocht), was al tamelijk gelukt, maar wat het duo uit Bristol hier voor mekaar krijgt is een ware triomf over de hele lijn. Op Tarot Sport slagen ze erin (met de hulp van gouwe ouwe Andrew Weatherall) de roes van Underworld op magistrale wijze te koppelen aan de ruis van Mogwai.


Goud: The Twilight Sad, Forget the night ahead
The Scottish guitar army strikes again. De vorige plaat was een groeier. Forget the night ahead sleurt je als een razende pitbull mee naar de diepste krochten van iemands getormenteerde ziel. Als er één groep de post-rock naar de stadions kan brengen is het The Twilight Sad. Zanger James Grahan zingt met z'n typische Schotse tongval met veel zelfvertrouwen en venijn over de gitaarmuur van Andy MacFarlane ("Kevin Shields-by-way-of-Thurston Moore" dixit Pitchfork). De teksten zijn soms pure poë-morris-zie: "Theres a girl in the crowd and she's bawling her eyes out. The only girl in town with her fingers in her eyelids".

Ik ben er haast zeker van dat er niet veel internauten deze plaat op hun eerste stek zullen plaatsen, maar dit is voor mij het album van 2009 dat in z'n geheel het meeste indruk maakte. Forget the night ahead is van A tot Z een aanslag op je trommelvliezen en op je geestesgesteldheid. The Antlers zullen in vele andere lijstjes opduiken, maar deze Jocks make The Antlers look like sissies. Play it loud. Play it late. Play it alone. Play it a lot!

20 + 1 Trivial things to know about The Blue Aeroplanes.

1. There have been 42 Blue Aeroplanes.
2. Swagger was Gil Norton's first production after the Pixies "Doolittle".
3. The idea for Swagger's cover originated from the St Martin's College Of Art graduate year-book entry by Freddie Robins, now couturier to the stars.
4. The name Blue Aeroplanes comes from the Polish "Nibieske Samoloty" which was originally going to be the name of Wojtek's brother's band.
5. At their Mean Fiddler gig in 1996, the Aeroplanes encored with the Sex Pistols' New York, with lead vocals by Paul Kaye in his persona as Dennis Pennis.
6. For several months, visitors to Michael Stipe's house in Athens, Georgia, were given a choice of Swagger or Bulgarian folk music. According to Peter Buck, Swagger got played "a lot".
7. The Aeroplanes are applying to the Guinness Book Of World Records for the greatest number of siblings in one rock band (12).
8. Swagger reached 54 in the UK National Chart and was also Top 10 in the US Rolling Stone Alternative Chart.
9. The video for Jacket Hangs was directed by Hugh Thomson, producer/director of the TV series Dancing In The Street. He is now an explorer, mainly to the Amazon.
10. Ex-Aeroplanes have found gainful employment with Massive Attack, Primal Scream, Suede, The Mekons, Robyn Hitchcock, Josh Rouse, Witness, The Oyster Band, Boo Hewerdine, Lupine Howl, Strangelove, Placebo and Busted.
11. At the time Swagger was recorded, Rodney Allen was 20 and Alex Lee was 18.
12. Steve Lamacq introduced Jacket Hangs on Radio 1 in 2002 as having "the best opening line in rock history".
13. Jacket Hangs is the only song never to have been dropped from an Aeroplanes set.
14. "Swagger" was Rock Album of the year in the Times, the Sunday Times and the Independent On Sunday. It also racked up up 6 singles of the week between "Jacket Hangs" and "...And Stones".
15. Swagger promo cassettes didn't include composer credits. No one noticed that the words to The Applicant were written by Sylvia Plath rather than by Gerard.
16. "Altitude" was the band's 9th studio album, not including compilations, and the first to contain a track recorded entirely on Walkman cassette recorders.
17. The Aeroplanes demo which secured them their major label deal consisted of 5 new songs recorded as a desk tape at a charity gig at Bristol's Colston Hall. Ensign were the only label not to ask the band to re-record the demo.
18. The album Cavaliers (ArtStar, 2000) was an early out-take from Altitude. It was meant to be an 11-minute Who-style mini-opera but turned out to be 26 minutes long and was therefore released separately.
19. The Aeroplanes were rejected by BBC 2's The Late Show, home to Germaine Greer, Tom Paulin et al, for being "too arty". They were never given a John Peel session, apparently for being "too rock & roll".
20. In spite of being (by record sales and concert tickets) Bristol's 4th biggest band behind Massive Attack, Portishead and Tricky, they were not included in the only book so far written on the history of Bristol music.
